It’s been an exciting month…to say the least. Not only did we have our last 2 crias (baby llamas) for 2002, but we also got a new machine! We had the chance to have a new dehairing machine delivered 2 weeks after purchasing it…great timing. So…it was a matter of moving the other machines to make room for the new baby. So far, it has been welcomed with open arms by pygora, cashmere, llama, alpaca and sheep owners alike. Not only does the machine remove 90% of vegetation in one pass through the machine, but does a great job on guard hair also. Give us a call if you have any questions about the new machine. This service is available for the introductory price of $2.00 per pound per pass through the machine. This is on an incoming weight.

As for the long awaited washing process…well, we’re still working on it. We’re trying all different possibilities…like irrigating our pastures with the water we’ve used for washing. Can’t waste a thing these days, right? Wish I could report

something solid, but hopefully I can in the next newsletter! In the mean time, we’re doing a small amount of washing. The charge for this service is $3.00/#. This is also based on incoming weight.

Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival was a wonderful event. Not only were there plenty of animals of all sorts, but there were so many vendors with so many wonderful items for sale. I got a chance to walk through many of the barns and saw many of the vendors and their wares. What an exciting show. Hope you had a chance to join us. If you are too far away to do so, it may be something to consider next year. If you do make it, please come and introduce yourself…

After Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival (OFFF), Jackie and I both came down with a cruddy cold. It was a doozie, but I think we’ll both live. Naturally, I shared mine with Jim (husband). He was soooo happy with me! Ha! Because of this (and the getting ready for the show) this newsletter is a little

late and our classes are a little sparse and they’re all soap related and will run through lunch. Please bring a sack lunch. Here’s the info I got from the instructor:

Natural, handcrafted soap is so luxurious to use. It is simple indulgence at it’s best. In these “hands on” workshops local soap maker, Renee Elting will show you how to make your own personalized soaps. Renee has been making natural, handcrafted soaps for over 10 years. She will share her recipes and techniques using natural ingredients including some from her own organic family farm. The soap we make in class will be ready for holiday gift giving.

Please bring:
Pair of goggles Rubber gloves
Long sleeve shirt
Small box (12”x12”x12”)
2 old bath towels

October 26, 2002—Beginning Soap Making 10-3
No experience necessary. This class will focus on what makes soap…soap. How to choose just the right ingredients for your own specific needs. How to choose recipes, what works and what doesn’t. We will go over safety issues and hopefully make you comfortable enough to work on your own. You will learn how to make soap using the cold process method. Customize your own soaps and take it home with you. A non-refundable deposit of $15.00 and $10.00 material fee will put you in class on the 26th.

November 2nd and 9th –Soap making II 10-3
Prerequisite—Beginning soap making. Expand your knowledge. Now that you have the cold process down, yow about trying hot processing? Layering and marbleizing will also be covered along with milk-based soaps. We will do some customizing of soaps and some the class will share. Because this is a 2 session class, the non-refundable deposit is $20.00 with the material fee being $20.00.

Boy, sounds like I’ll have to make time for more soap classes!!! Ha! Believe me, they are fun and informative.

For those of you that belong to the Northwest Regional Spinner’s Association, I am the rep. for area 6030. We meet every 3rd Wednesday of the month. This month it will be October 16. Hope to see many smiling faces here that night…starts at 7:00pm and goes to…well, when everyone gets tired of spinning…or smiling!!!

Just had something else scheduled to be here on November 16th. That’s the Pygora breeders…many of whom have already seen the dehairing machine. We hope to have all the machines set up so people can see how they all work. Another fascinating day at Fantasy Fibers.

I definitely have run into a dilemma and figure the only way I can resolve it is to present

it to you the customers. If I get fiber in that is “washed” by the owner that’s not clean enough to run its best, do I run it anyway, rewash it and charge the customer or return it uncarded/unspun. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Remember, phone calls to the customer gets expensive for me and, depending on if I get a hold of the person or an answering machine, our schedule could be shuffled. Thanks for listening to my complaining!

On a sadder note, we have 3 sad weanlings humming in the side pasture…being weaned from their mamas! L These wee ones are looking for new homes…black and white male (GREAT fiber) Chilean/N. American, white male Chilean/N. American, and grey female full Chilean. They all sing great….ha.

Well, once again it’s time to get this out to you…I’m running late as usual. Take care & God bless.
